We raise a few of these because they draw huge amounts of people to the kennel because sooo many people think they're the cutest dog ever. However, I would recommend a Yorkie mix over the purebred for increased potential for better health, easier house training, and lower maintenance expenses. I would estimate that half of those who buy purebred Yorkshire Terriers never get them properly house trained.

A JackRat, YorkieJack, or other hybrid with the Jack Russell can be a wonderful companion for the pet owner who wants a more active and energetic dog. They do tend to settle down a bit as they grow older. You may want to consider a red/white Rat Terrier also. 99% of the people who buy Rat Terriers love them while many of those who buy purebred Jack Russells give them away later because they're really hyper when young and more likely to bite when they're old. Jack Russell hybrids are a better loved pet than the purebred Jack.

A much healthier pet than a Chinese Crested purebred, because these have a full set of healthy teeth.
This is the only type of pet that seems to almost never bother allergy patients.

A non-shedding very high maintenance expensive to own pet, but you won't get to the office and have hair on your clothing from this one. Ownership costs of a long haired pet over a 15 year life expectancy can cost thousands more than a Rat Terrier, yet people call me and their first question is "how much". A more affordable option is to manage the shedding of your short haired dog with the furminator comb. This is also much less work than long hair. |

Tri-color Toy Rat Terrier (Fiest) pup at home (photo by mom)! One of the best all around pets that anyone can own. Everyone loves these! They are great with kids, easy to house train, and the larger specimens sometimes live even more than 20 years! These may also be a better choice for the allergy patient bothered by smells than many of the non-shedding pets, since these have almost no body odor, while long coated non-shedding pets must be bathed constantly to control their smell. The shedding of a Rat Terrier can be almost eliminated by occasional use of a furminator comb, and skipping the beauty parlor with the long coat pet can save thousands over a long life expectancy.

Bichon Frise or MaltaChon pups are almost identical in appearance at 7 weeks. We sometimes also have other crosses that are very similar in appearance. A non-shedding high maintenance pet.. |

This ShihTzu/Rat Terrier hybrid is likely to be a longer broken coated pet with reduced shedding as compared to a short haired dog. It will also likely be more tolerant of children than some older ShihTzus and be much more affordable to own than a ShihTzu. Most of these will have fewer skin and coat problems, and need much less maintenance than the purebred. Choosing the Shih-Rat over a purebred ShihTzu can easily save the owner hundreds in ownership costs over time. Photos of longer coated dogs are but a moment in time. These do get much fuzzier as they grow older. I have many buyers who won't buy a Shih-Rat until they're 3 months old, because it takes 3 months for the hair to grow to the point that they think they're cute.
Because these are hybrid crosses using Poodles or Yorkies with Beagles or Rat Terriers, these are likely to be much healthier later in life than most purebred poodles or yorkies which often get diabetes, epilepsy, etc, later in life. These are likely to be a much healthier and easier to care for than the traditional girlie pets, AND they are likely to shed less than the short haired pets Rattles have an average weight of 8-10 lbs as an adult. Poogles are likely to average about 15 lbs. 90% of these long-coat poodle crosses are likely to be non-shedders. Another option that is available for those who want a fuzzy pet simply because they think it's cute is to buy a broken coated puppy instead of the longest coat. This will give you some of the look without the high maintenance costs. A broken coat is likely to shed less than a short haired dog also.
broken coat brindle/white pup at 8 weeks!

A cute high maintenance fuzzy!! |

We only have limited amounts of purebred Boston Terriers available. I raise Boston Terriers because they draw many visitors to the kennel. I always try to persuade our buyers to buy another type of pet because Boston Terriers are likely to have more weird health problems than most other breeds. A Rat Terrier or Brat is not so likely to go blind prematurely, get cancer, have a heat stroke, or need corrective surgery later just so it can breathe properly.

Red and Dappled Dachshund pups |
Lemon/white! Rat Terriers are the best-loved pet that we sell because they're smart, healthy, and won't need $10,000.00 worth of haircuts, grooming, and related expenses over their lifespan like the long coated breeds often do. The Rat can also live 10 yrs after the fuzzy goes blind from hair in his eyes!

Tri-Color Beagle
Since this beagle pup was raised inside a USDA standard kennel facility, there is NO CHANCE that a raccoon or other sick wildlife crawled on or into his cage last night. This means that your family will not need rabies shots next week unexpectedly. Rabies is 100% fatal in humans who actually get it, and preventative shots for those who realize that they were accidentally exposed can cost from $2000.00-$4000.00 per family member. Will you be the next taking rabies shots because of a backyard puppy kept outside before its rabies vaccine was given at 4 months old? Is there another place in the area that can offer a Beagle puppy kept in quarantine until it goes home with you? Many area hospitals have seen the need for rabies shots increase to the point that at least one designated rabies shot nurse has remained busy throughout an entire shift. I recently had a visitor who had spent $10,000.00 buying rabies shots for his entire family. His insurance provider refused to pay, claiming that they were not sure that an exposure had occurred.

YorkieRat pup! Likely healthier and easier to house train than purebred Yorkies! A YorkieRat is likely to be a mentally and physically healthier pet than a purebred Yorkie because they are a Rat Terrier hybrid. Although the YorkieRat may be a slight step down from the health and intelligence of a purebred Rat Terrier, they are a healthier genetics option for someone who is so into this look that they would buy a girlie pet at any cost because they think this is "soooo cute"! Disadvantages with this one may be that some may stay too small to live as long as possible, or need haircuts, because this genetic information may be inherited from the Yorkie parent.

The long coated variety of this is a high maintenance pet that will need frequent haircuts and grooming, while the broken coated ones don't require much grooming and maintenance. Another designer hybrid! Likely healthier and more intelligent than most of the purebred girlie pets, but you should NEVER buy a long haired dog if you don't want to spend lots of money on a pet. Even if you try to do the haircuts at home and not go to the beauty shop, related expenses that often occur in long coated dogs can cost enough over the life of your pet to buy a new car. |

Beautiful red brindle/white color. Rat Terriers and Rat Terrier hybrid mixes interact at a higher level than most other breeds. I have sold a purebred Rat Terrier to a deaf couple who have taught their dog sign language. This pet responds to many different hand signals, and will go hide under the bed when Mom makes the sign for "bath"!

Puggle pup! Available now. Some of the first Puggle pups to be offered in this area. Own a Puggle puppy! One of the hottest selling designer hybrid in the US! These are likely to be a healthier genetics pet than the purebred Pug, English Bulldog, Boston Terrier, or other similar short-nosed pet. They are likely to be a much cheaper to own pet than a cheaper to buy Pug, Boston Terrier, or similar puppy, however, because of the decreased risk of expensive health problems that other purebred similar breeds are more likely to have later in life. No dog is more entertaining than a Puggle! These do a great job of loving a family, and they provide endless hours of fun!
